From 2016 on we coöperate with Zonta club aan de Leede (fundraising), Stichting Wilde Ganzen (co-funding) and Zonta Kampala (implementation) on retaining girls in school in Uganda. For this goal we have built toilet facilities for girls at 3 schools in Kanungu district, Kihihi sub-county, one of the poorest parts of Uganda (Kihihi-, Bushere-, Kibimbiri primary school). We provided 800 girls with sustainable sanitary towel packages. Interactive training on sexual- and reproductive health subjects, and self-defence was given to them. In addition we co-funded the nurse-midwife training for three very motivated girls whose families could not bear the necessary costs.

Due to the COVID 19 crisis we planned to facilitate return to school by making preventive measures for pupils and teachers possible. However we had to change part of the project due to the long-lasting lock-down and uncertainty about the time of re-opening at the end of 2021. The remaining money was spent to supportive measures for schoolgirls 13-18 years who got pregnant or became a mother during the lock-down.

Planning 2022-2023

We will take up our plan for a further roll-out of measures to prevent girls from dropping out of school. We plan to build toilet buildings for at least two other schools in need in the Kanungu district, as well as support making of sanitary towels and giving of lessons as mentioned before for girls and boys. 3 schools have indicated their need, Rushoroza primary school,  Kishuro primary school and Nyamwegabira primary school.

Financial report

General remark: funds raised by Zonta aan de Leede club did not pass our account. They were transferred directly to the Wilde Ganzen account for additional funding. From there it went to our partner in Kampala.
